AGU is a worldwide scientific community that advances, through unselfish cooperation in research, the understanding of Earth and space for the benefit of humanity. To help achieve this mission, AGU has two campaigns: an Annual Campaign for unrestricted contributions during the membership renewal cycle and a Fund Drive for restricted contributions that have a lasting impact. In March 2004, then AGU president-elect John Orcutt asked James A. Austin Jr. to lead an ambitious initiative for AGU. The goal was to create a development board to help the Union raise much needed funds for outreach. After careful consideration, Jamie accepted the challenge enthusiastically, and within a year he established his own challenge to the membership.
Between 2004 and 2009, Jamie brought extraordinary passion to the task—a passion for advancing science, for mentoring students and early-career scientists, and for serving AGU. He singlehandedly populated the board with dynamic scientists and corporate leaders. He unabashedly and repeatedly prodded AGU to do as much “inreach” as outreach because few members knew anything about the Union’s education, public information, and public affairs programs. He gave generously of his ti me, talent, and financial resources.
His greatest contribution has been championing students and their need for all kinds of support: mentoring, networking, and financial aid. To this end, he created the James A. Austin Student Travel Grant Challenge with an initial pledge of $50,000.
He asked members and corporate donors to match his gift on a 3:1 basis, and it worked. Since 2005, more than half a million dollars have been contributed by 400 donors to the challenge. Hundreds of students have benefited from the challenge and were able to present their research for the first ti me at Fall Meeting, Joint Assembly, and other conferences. Altogether, he helped raise more than 3 million dollars for AGU’s outreach programs.
For his many contributions, the Union's officers now recognize Jamie Austin. He has played an important role in leading AGU into a new era of organizational excellence.

“Geologizing” and Generosity
AGU and the family of Dr. David S. Miller are pleased to announce that the first David S. Miller Scholarship will be awarded in June 2011. This scholarship is made possible through the generosity of 69 donors, including the Miller family and friends and colleagues of Dave. His wife Betsy has been at the heart of this initiative to perpetuate Dr. Miller’s interest in mentoring students.
AGU member David S. Miller contributed his time and wealth generously to people and charitable organizations in need.
Geology turned out to be one of the great loves of Miller's life, and he was happiest when he was in the field “geologizing,” as he liked to call it.
The David S. Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund is intended to encourage undergraduate and graduate students who exhibit inherent interest and academic potential in fields related to Earth sciences.
